List of UPSC MAINS Optional Subjects as per the latest syllabus : The UPSC mains (written) examination consists of nine papers, two qualifying papers and seven papers counted for ranking. As per the latest syllabus, the number of optional subjects to be selected is reduced to one, though the weightage of the optional paper is only 500 marks out of 2000 marks. As per Civil services mains new exam pattern general studies papers consisting 1000 marks and Optional paper consists of two papers of 250 marks each. Paper-I One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the 18 languages included in the VIIIth Schedule to the Constitution (Qualifying Paper) 300 Marks
Paper-II English (Qualifying Paper) 300 Marks
Paper-III Essay 200 Marks
Papers IV & V General Studies (300 Marks for each paper) 600 Marks
Papers VI, VII, VIII & IX Any two subjects (each having 2 papers) to be selected from the prescribed optional subjects (300 marks for each paper) 1200 Marks
Total Marks for Written Examination 2000 Marks
Interview Test 300 Marks
Grand Total 2300 Marks

Following are the List of UPSC MAINS OPTIONAL SUBJECTS with full syllabus which are applicable for UPSC Mains 2016 & 2017 Exams.

There are 25 optional subjects in UPSC civil services mains exam and there are 26 literature papers in civil services mains exam. Total optional subjects 51. You can opt for the literature of a language as an optional subject, only if you have graduated in the literature of that particular language as the main subject. Interest should be the prime criteria for choosing any optional subject or optional literature preparation.
