Standardized Admission Tests to Study Abroad at a Glance.

If you are applying for undergraduate or graduate programs in study abroad, you may required to attend one English Language Test and one standardized Test. There are various standardized tests which a student can take as per the requirements of the course or line of study.  However, depending on the college/course you choose, you may not need to attend any standardized test; but you would still be required to provide one language test score at the time of admission.

Here’s a quick guide to help you to decide which admission test is more relevant to you, the kind of test pattern and other test details.

Languages Exams:

If English is not the student’s native language, then the student must take any one among the following English proficiency tests.

1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): The TOEFL test is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States.The TOEFL is among the major English proficiency tests in the world.

  • Eligibility: Aspirants who wish to study a program delivered in English.
  • Mode:  The TOEFL can be taken in two main modes, the Internet Based Test (iBT) or the Paper Based Test (PBT). The TOEFL iBT test is administered via the Internet, and the TOEFL PBT test is administered in a paper-delivered format.
  • Content: The TOEFL iBT test measures reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. It is administered online at testing sites around the world. The TOEFL PBT test measures reading, listening, grammar and writing skills and is currently offered only in locations where testing via the Internet is not available. The scoring is 0 to 120.
  • Score Validity: The TOEFL score is valid for two years.
  • Registration Details: The candidate can apply for the test online at any time of the year in the official website given below.
  • Test Dates: The iBT test is offered more than fifty times a year at ETS-authorized test centers throughout the world. However, it can be taken once in a twelve-day period. The PBT test is being phased out and is currently offered only in areas where testing via the Internet is not available. It is offered four times in a year during the months of October, November, January and April.

2. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS):  Like the TOEFL, the IELTS is an English proficiency test accepted by almost all the universities and educational institutions especially in Australia, Britain, Canada and New Zealand. This test is a requirement for immigration into Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

  • Eligibility: Aspirants who wish to go English speaking countries for their secondary education, work experience or training programs.
  • Modules: The IELTS is offered in two modules ie IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Academic module is for those who wish to study in an English speaking country. The General module is for those who wish to seek immigration in an English speaking country or work there.
  • Content: The IELTS is a 2 hour 45 minute test. Listening and Speaking are the same for both the modules, but the subject matter of the Reading and Writing components differs depending on which test you take. The IELTS Results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest).
  • Score Validity: The IELTS Score is valid for two years.
  • Registration Details: The applicants can register online at any time of the year in the official website given below.
  • Test Dates: The test is offered 48 times a year. The test can be taken as many times as the student desires. However, it can be taken only once in a two month period.

3. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE): Like the TOEFL and the IELTS, the PTE Academic is a computer-based test of English for study abroad and immigration. The PTE test is approved by the Australian Government for visa applications and accepted by most of the colleges in the UK, Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland, including Harvard, Yale and INSEAD.

  • Eligibility:  Aspirants who wish to go English speaking countries for their secondary education, work experience or training programs.
  • Content: The test duration is three hours and consists of three primary sections namely the Speaking and Writing Section, Reading Section and the Listening Section. The score ranges from 10 to 90.
  • Score validity: The PTE test score is valid for two years.
  • Registration Details: The registration for the test can be done online in the test’s official website.
  • Test dates: They run the test sessions 363 days of the year, at one of over 200 locations worldwide.

Standardised Exams:

Depending on the country and the colleges/courses you choose will be required to attend any one of the following standardized exams.

1. Graduate Record Examinations (GRE): The GRE General test is a standardized examination conducted by ETS. Aspirants who are wish to pursue a master’s, MBA, specialized master’s in business or doctoral degree can take GRE General Test. It is used by most of the graduate and business schools for selecting students for various Masters Programmes.

  • Eligibility: The test taker must have completed a bachelor degree. However, a final year bachelor degree student can also take the test.
  • Mode: The test can be taken in a computer based pattern or in a paper based patter. Both the tests are of 3 hours and 45 minute duration, plus short breaks.
  • Content: The test consists of four sections namely the Verbal section, Quantitative section, Writing section and the Experimental section containing question from any of the previous sections. The score ranges from 130 to 170.
  • Score Validity: The GRE score is valid for five years, after your test administration date.
  • Test Dates: The computer based test is offered many times in a year however it can be taken only five times in a year. The paper based test is conducted in the months of October, November and February.

2. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT): The GMAT is a standardized aptitude test to get into the world’s leading business schools. The GMAT test score is accepted by more than 2,000 business schools worldwide for short listing their MBA applicants.

  • Eligibility: The candidate must be over 18 years of age and must be a graduate.
  • Content:  The test consists of four sections namely the Analytical Writing Assessment section, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative section and the Verbal section. The score ranges from 200 to 800. The test is of 3 hours and 30 minutes.
  • Score validity:  The score is valid for five years.
  • Test dates:  The candidate can take the test at any date. However, it can be taken only once in 31 days and 5 times in a year.
  • Registration Details: The registration can be done at any time of the year either online or by fax. Online registration can be done in the official website.

3. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT):  The SAT is a standardized aptitude test widely used for selecting students for undergraduate courses colleges and universities in the United States.

  • Eligibility: Students must have completed class 12.
  • Content: The test consists of three sections namely the Reading section, the Mathematics sections and the Writing section. The score ranges from 400 to 1600. The duration of the test is 3 hours.
  • Score validity: The SAT score is valid for five years.
  • Registration details: The registration for the SAT exam can be done online in the official website after creating an account in the website.
  • Test Dates: The test is conducted four times in a year in the months of December, January, March and May.
